There are two common scams in the AC repair industry that all consumers should be mindful of whenever they are having their air conditioning systems worked on. The first is that some AC repair companies will say that they put an amount of refrigerant in your air conditioning system that they did not put in. Air conditioning refrigerant, R-22 and R-410A, is measured by the pound and comes out of a 30 pound jug that your AC repair person has stocked on his air conditioning service truck. The only way for your AC repair person to know exactly how many pounds of refrigerant he or she used to charge your air conditioner is to use a scale. The jug should be weighed on the scale before the technician charges your air conditioning system and the amount should be recorded. Then, after the technician has finished charging your air conditioning system with refrigerant, the jug should be weighed again. The difference between the two recorded weights is the amount of refrigerant charge, in pounds, that was put into your air conditioning system. If you are not using a reputable AC contractor like Your Green Team, be sure that you supervise this process to make sure that you are not taken advantage of by a technician who will tell you that you received more refrigerant in your air conditioning system than you actually did.

The second scam occurs when an AC repair person comes back year after year to “recharge” your system. What most people don’t understand about air conditioning systems is that air conditioners are “closed systems”. This means that the refrigerant cycles through the air conditioning system through a copper line that SHOULD NOT LEAK unless it has either developed a leak because something damaged it or because the copper line was never installed correctly in the first place. If your air conditioning system requires refrigerant then there is a refrigerant leak in your copper line or the system was never charged correctly when it was installed. Those are the only two options. Never let an AC repair person tell you that you need refrigerant year after year. If your air conditioning system was not charged correctly when it was installed you may need a refrigerant charge once. Other than that, you have a refrigerant leak, plain and simple, and the leak should be repaired for two reasons:

1) It is extremely harmful for refrigerant to leak into the atmosphere as it depletes the ozone layer. If your air conditioning system has a leak then it is releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere, no matter how slowly.

2) Until the leak is repaired you will continue to have to purchase costly refrigerant for your air conditioning system over and over, year after year.

So, if your AC repair person tells you that you need refrigerant, be sure to ask why and be sure to verify that the correct amount was weighed into your AC system.
