A Guide to Fixing Hot Spots in Your Home

August 30, 2019

Do you experience hot spots in your home when you run the air conditioner? Hot spots are a common AC problem that may indicate an issue with equipment but can also be caused by inadequate maintenance or even improper usage.

Schedule an AC System Inspection

Cooper Heating & Cooling has been helping homeowners in Denver, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and other communities for more than 40 years. Our team highly recommends seasonal checkups, which are fast and convenient, for early diagnosis of the issues that can cause hot spots. If it has been a while since your last AC inspection, schedule an appointment today. The first step is to eliminate whether the problem is with the air conditioner itself.

Replace Air Filters Regularly

The general rule is to change out your air filters every three months, but pet owners, for instance, often have to change them more frequently. Visually inspect the filters on a monthly basis, and change them whenever you can see the dirt that has accumulated.

Keep Return Vents Open and Clean

Return vents are crucial to maintaining proper air pressure in a system. They should never be closed unless the system has been configured for such or is able to adjust to pressure changes on the fly. Dust vents monthly in order to maintain optimal airflow.

When the Problem Is With a Particular Room

If you experience a hot spot consistently in the same area and other potential causes have been ruled out, it may be the room itself. Does it have a return vent? It may need one. If vent positioning is suboptimal, a deflector may be needed. If the room gets excessive sunlight, specialized shades may be needed in order to maintain cool temperatures.
