Your bathroom and kitchen plumbing in Colorado Springs, CO can really take a beating when you have more people than usual in your home. As the homeowner, it is up to you to do everything possible to prevent any such problems. It’s not a matter of policing your guests, of course. Here are a few tips to help you prevent plumbing problems when hosting company in your home.
More Dishes, More Problems
Okay, so you’re obviously going to feed your guests. Chances are that you’ll have fairly respectful guests in your home—you probably wouldn’t want to be hosting them otherwise—and they are going to want to help where they can while under your roof. That may mean offering to do the dishes or at least helping to clear the table. Don’t be afraid to give a bit of guidance.
If your guests are scraping everything from corn cobs to animal bones and rice or pasta into the garbage disposal, let them know that not every type of food waste is appropriate to put down the drain. If they’re soaking pots and pans without draining the grease and fat out of them first, just explain that this can lead to drainage issues and ask them to pour it off before putting it in the sink. It’s not stepping on toes, it’s just being responsible.
Look, we don’t want to embarrass anyone when it comes to their use of the bathroom, and that particular area is not something that most people talk about a whole lot. That being said, if you have guests with young children that will be using the bathroom, remind them that only toilet paper, and only a reasonable amount, is to be flushed down the toilet.
Those that do have babies with them should also be instructed not to flush baby wipes down the drain—no, not even the ones that claim to be flushable. They can lead to, at best, serious clogs. At worst, major backups. You don’t want to be dealing with that just because you didn’t feel comfortable being a bit assertive about your plumbing system and its limitations.
For the most part, the people that you’re hosting or having stayed with you for an extended period are probably people that you’re pretty comfortable around. They certainly wouldn’t want you dealing with a headache or expense of plumbing problems that they had a part in creating!
