Understanding How Air Flows Through Your Home

Airflow is a critical aspect of a comfortable, efficient and healthy home. Inadequate airflow can result in uneven cooling and heating as well as poor indoor air quality. Too much airflow can also result in uneven heating and cooling as well as a much higher energy bill.

Natural Ventilation

Natural ventilation refers to outside air that enters your home through cracks as well as gaps around doors and windows. Not all natural ventilation is unintended. Some is expected and even relied upon for optimal airflow. However, modern homes are very well-sealed and tend to experience less natural ventilation than older homes. You can also increase natural ventilation by opening some windows.

Mechanical Ventilation

Mechanical ventilation refers to the air ducts that distribute air throughout your home as well as the intakes that allow for fresh air and the exhausts that expel used air. Mechanical ventilation is very controlled to achieve maximum energy efficiency. Cooper Heating & Cooling has heating and cooling experts who know a thing or two about mechanical ventilation, and we can help ensure your system works properly.

Single-Speed vs. Variable-Speed Air Handlers

The traditional blower operates at a single speed, which means that the system has to be calibrated based on a specific pressure. Variable-speed blowers are able to fluctuate based on need. This means that their average speed is generally less, which means greater energy efficiency overall.

Zoned vs. Centralized Heating and Air Conditioning

With a single-speed air handler, you never want to close a return register since it will disrupt that balance. A variable-speed air handler, on the other hand, could account for it. This is what makes zoned systems possible. A zoned approach allows airflow to be manipulated on a per-zone basis.
