Warning Signs You Need AC Repair

May 31, 2019

Any air conditioning system, even a brand-new one, will develop problems down the road. While it is ideal to get regular AC maintenance, not everyone can do this. Still, not all is lost. Home and business owners alike can know when they need repairs by keeping their eyes and ears open.

The Most Obvious Warning Signs

There are some warning signs that you can detect without even inspecting your system. For example, you might notice that your central AC unit is not cooling your rooms or floors evenly. Poor air circulation is sometimes the result of debris building up in the vents. If the airflow is weak everywhere on your property, then the compressor may be going out.

Poor air circulation forces the system to run longer to do its job, so if you notice a sharp rise in your electricity bills, this may be behind it. Without repairs, it can cause the motor to overheat.

Suspicious Noises and Smells

Your unit might make various noises that signify the need for repairs. For instance, a banging noise could mean a part in the compressor is broken. A loose part may make a clanking sound. Loose or unbalanced fan blades may buzz, while a dislodged belt will squeal.

Musty smells should raise a red flag as they may indicate mold and mildew in the vents or condensation build-up in the drain pan. Also, if your AC is too big for your property, it will short-cycle, causing air to pass through the vents that are not properly dehumidified.

Leaks Can Be a Serious Issue

Looking at the AC unit, you might notice a leak. The worst-case scenario is that this is refrigerant; not only will this compromise AC performance, but it will also impact your health. Another possibility is that the drain tube is broken.
